TED is an organization that strives to share great ideas. TED Talks are a form of media in which speakers have less than 20 minutes to share their stories. These short presentations are regarded as one of the most effective forms of media for the transmission of ideas and information.
As part of its mission TED strives to “welcome people from every discipline and culture” to engage in the exchange of ideas. But how accessible is this form of media to people of every discipline and culture? To what extend does Ted strive to make it applicable, relevant, and accessible to everyone? Looking at the “20 most popular ted talks of all time”, it is about split between men and women, but only two speakers appear to be of an ethnicity other than white.
One could argue that this is more of a critique of the audience than organization. In order to learn more, I asked some of the leaders of TEDxEmory about the degree to which they consider inclusivity of all cultures and people in the work they do on campus.
